Spotwash Video Demo

Filming by the beach on a sunny Vancouver day, sure beats the office! We had tons of fun on this shoot because our client was open and willing to try new things. Robert wanted to showcase his unique car cleaning service, but didn’t want it to appear as an “instructional” video.

I interviewed Robert to identify the exceptional elements of his business, then my crew and I brainstormed creative treatments. We knew we could play with the idea of washing an entire car with only a litre of water. First came the jug, then the toy car, and presto! Our opening concept was born.

Robert was a breeze to coach on camera because of his naturally outgoing personality.

If you’re thinking of adding some video content to your website, do it. It’s a fantastic way to showcase your service or product, it will significantly increase sales by minimizing risk for potential clients and it can increase your chance of getting a first page Google ranking by 50x.

Hardcore Ping Pong In Vancouver

Everyone could use more Pong in their lives… more Ping Pong.
It’s a game of extremes.
A casual game to get your mind off things, or a serious sport to dedicate 5 hours to every Saturday night!!

The Vancouver Ping Pong Meet Up is the BOMB!
Everyone is extremely friendly and dedicated!
I heard stories of Ping Pong transforming lives, taking people from zero to hero with a nothing but fierce determination and a paddle in hand.

Stanley, the organizer is passionate about elevating the perception of Ping Pong so it’s taken more seriously as a sport. I have to admit, I’ve stereotyped Ping Pong as merely a “game” in the past.

So check it out here. It isn’t just for Asians! 🙂

Vancouver Restaurant Adventure – Mochikas Peruvian Cafe

When’s the last time you ate Peruvian food?

Exactly.

I really love digging out tiny ethnic restaurants, tucked away in the most unlikely of places. And Mochikas Peruvian Cafe takes the cake.

It’s the kind of place you’d walk right past, even with the exact address. That’s because it’s inside the “Platinum Touch Auto Spa” at 5th and Pine.

Trust me though. It’s worth the hunt.

When I was doing a food column for CBC Radio, I reported on their opening.

And thankfully, they’re still around.

The last time I was at Mochikas, I was a strict vegan. I’m still a vegan, but cheat now and again especially when it comes to trying new foods. That night I went overboard!

The ceviche was delightfully spicy with chunks of fresh red snapper, octopus and corn marinated in lime and red onions. Then the kicker. Beef heart. Hard core. It was sliced thin, skewered on a stick, quite chewy but really tasty. You’d have no idea it was all heart. Pedro told me the history – the dish came from African slaves in Peru who were only given the cow innards to eat. In the 1950s, his father would never eat that kind of meat. But now, beef heart is really popular.

My all time favourite were the pork belly sliders. This is a typical Peruvian breakfast item on the weekend after a night of drinking. The succulent pork was a bit crispy Chinese style with a chunk of yam inside. Hungover or not, they were delish!

I highly recommend the Peruvian food at Mochikas. There aren’t many options here in Vancouver and this place is the most authentic. If I wasn’t a vegan, I’d be mowing it down Peruvian styles all the time. Their food packs a ton of punchy flavour.

Call ahead though because during the week, they serve a limited menu. The weekends offer a full menu and live music. If you manage to find the place, your palette will be well rewarded! A culinary adventure indeed!

ps. The owners, Pedro and Jullienne are friends with the manager of the Auto Spa, which is how they ended up getting the cafe space.

For My Beautiful Oma on Mother’s Day

It’s easy to take your family for granted, especially your mother.
I know I did as a kid. My oma would embarrass me with her quirky ways, habits I’ve picked up myself as an adult (hey, in this economy you really can haggle down prices at the mall.) Oh geez, I’m turning into my mother!

Which is actually a good thing. My mom was an eco-warrior before it was trendy (tho it was economics, not environmentalism that motivated her.) She saved water and constantly turned off the lights because she grew up poor in Korea.

Oma always gave us fruit, not sweets and used very little salt in her cooking. In Korean cuisine, that meant lots of complaining at the dinner table but now I’m grateful. I will live a longer, healthier life because I can appreciate the real flavour of fresh, whole foods versus the salty, sugary processed crap on grocery shelves.

So here’s a huge hug and a sloppy kiss for my Oma on Mother’s Day.
love
Daughter Jaeny
